Dentists deserve to thrive: Embracing the business behind the smile

Consider this: Would Jeff Bezos spend his days packing Amazon boxes while simultaneously managing global logistics and strategy? It sounds unimaginable. Yet, this describes the daily reality for most dentists.

Dentistry isnt just healthcare; its micro-engineering performed daily with precision measured in fractions of millimeters. Each patient arrives expecting nothing less than perfection. No one proudly proclaims, I absolutely adore my slightly crooked tooth! The bar is relentlessly high, patient expectations unforgiving.

Ironically, despite the complexity and responsibility, dentists often feel guilty about financial success. Why? Because somewhere along the line, the profession absorbed a narrative that thriving financially is almost unethical. Dentists are subtly shamed for driving luxury cars or taking vacations theyve earned through years of hard study and intense labor. Yet, would patients trust their health to someone whose car barely survives the commute?

Take the curious case of a patient who switched dentists upon seeing their previous dentist’s Mercedes. Would they have preferred their healthcare professional driving a rusted-out Pacer? This scenario perfectly captures an odd but prevalent judgment: the assumption that a successful dentist is somehow less caring or authentic. But let’s flip that thinking: wouldnt you want your dentist to succeed? Financial success isn’t greed; its evidence of competence, efficiency, and reinvestment into patient care.

Financial stability empowers a dentist to reinvest in their practice: better technology, enhanced training, improved patient comfort, and stronger teams. Dentists who manage their practices successfully can afford state-of-the-art equipment that elevates patient outcomes and experiences. Those who invest in business acumen often provide better care, not less.

However, theres another side of this coin: dentists flaunting wealth on social media. Yes, transparency is great, but there’s a fine line between being relatable and inadvertently fueling negative stereotypes. Successful CEOs, like Tim Cook, rarely showcase their wealth publicly because the focus remains squarely on their companys mission and service quality.

Dentists face the complex challenge of balancing clinical mastery with entrepreneurial prowess. The reality? Being exceptional at both isnt just admirable; its essential. Those who neglect the business side inevitably risk burnout or compromise their quality of care chasing unsustainable revenue.

Patients often feel entitled to scrutinize dental fees, as if owning a piece of the practice. Yet ironically, these critiques often come from those who invest the least in their oral health. Dentistry fees arent about salary, they’re about return on investment. Investment in decades of education, advanced training, ongoing certifications, expensive equipment, and dedicated teams working tirelessly to deliver excellence.

To unhappy patients who deem dentistry too expensive, a gentle reminder: dental schools are open and welcoming applicants. It’s enlightening (and humbling) to walk in someone elses shoes. Eespecially when those shoes involve microscopic precision, daily surgeries, and immense responsibility.

Dentists, it’s time to stop apologizing for your success. Be proud of what youve achieved. You deserve to thrive because when you thrive, so does the quality of care. Let’s own our success unapologetically. After all, dentistry is not just healthcare; it’s the art of precision, the science of excellence, and yes, the business of thriving.

Have fun thriving, and have fun Making the MOVE!
